COUNCILLORS put the spotlight on public transport infrastructure during a debate on a 12 single-bedroom unit development at Wellington Point.
The proposed development is a two-storey building on a 920 square metre block on the corner of Main Road and Harris Street.
The site backs onto the Cleveland railway line and is 260 metres from the Wellington Point train station.
Councillors agreed there was a need for diverse housing in the Redlands and that the application applied with planning schemes.
The developer would need to meet conditions like reducing the number of units to 11 and moving the bin storage facility.
Cr Wendy Boglary said that residents complained about train commuters parking on roads like Harris Street.
"With the recent changes in train travel zones, more and more people are using the Wellington Point station instead of Ormiston and Cleveland due to travel cost differences," she said.
Cr Boglary said had asked the state government to look into using the block, which borders state government land, and could have been used for parking.
"This street is every day without exception a nightmare for travellers trying to get a park and locals simply wishing to leave their homes," she said.
"My frustration is once this block of units is built the chance of having a larger more commonsense-size car park for the train station is lost."
Mayor Karen Williams said she would continue to lobby the state government for better public transport infrastructure.
However she said the push was for multi-modal travel, rather than providing more car parks.
Cr Murray Elliott said medium density developments like the one proposed should be near train stations.
Cr Boglary and Cr Tracey Huges voted against the application.
