REDLANDS BMX Club will look back on its 40-year history - from racing behind a Cleveland discount store to sending its athletes to international championships - at a birthday celebration this month.
The club - which now has some of Queensland's top facilities - began as Cleveland BMX Club behind the Cut Price store on Middle Street on February 14, 1979.
Later that year, it moved to behind the Cleveland Rollercade on Shore Street and changed its name to Redlands BMX Club.
In 1982, it moved to its current location at Redlands PCYC, where a five metre start hill and professional-standard gate were installed in 2016.
The club's fastest lap time was set by Matt Krasevskis during the 2018 Strawberry Festival Race Day with a time of 28.465 seconds.
Club riders have also enjoyed success on the national stage, with several Redlands athletes coming home from the recent 2019 BMXA BAD BOY National Championships with finals placings.
Several athletes are also preparing to head to the world titles in Belgium next month.
Spokesperson Megan Mothershaw said what made the club special was that tracks were open to the public when not in use by the club.
"If you (want) to give the sport a go, you can test out the track in your own time to see if it's right for you," she said.
"As a club we don't push our riders to go to different events or compete interstate, we encourage and support members wanting to have a go whether they always come first or last.
"We also have a newly formed non-competitive riders group for adults on some race nights.
"It's a group aimed at being fun and having a go rather than competing against the faster riders."
The club takes licensed riders aged from two up. BMX Australia licences can be purchased online all year round.
Riders, former riders, their families and other Redlands locals are invited to the club's 40th anniversary celebrations at the Capalaba Sports Club on Sunday, June 23 from 1pm.
Guests can enjoy a trip down memory lane with slide shows and displays, as well as a presentation from guest speaker Darrell Lockhart.
