COUNCIL has agreed to give the Cleveland Scouts a 30-year lease, as the organisation continues to rebuild after a fire last year destroyed the Ormiston den.
Redland City Council's leases with Girl Guides and other Scout branches are for 20 years or less but councillors agreed at Wednesday's meeting to the 30-year lease.
Council officers said the den being built after the previous one was destroyed fire was worth about $400,000, representing a large investment by the organisation.
Cr Wendy Boglary said Scouts Queensland was building a bigger and better main building to serve the Cleveland group and the wider Scouting community as an event and meeting place.
"The long-term lease will provide them with peace of mind about their significant capital investment," she said.
"The Scout Association is extraordinarily community-minded, giving other community groups access to their dens.
"In a wonderful example of inclusiveness, they have considered these community uses when designing the new building on the Cleveland Scouts site in Ormiston."
Cr Boglary said the new den was not just a Scout facility but was a community resource.
Mayor Karen Williams said the Scouts Queensland had first erected a club room on the 8090 square metre site on the corner of Bainbridge and Gordon streets in 1922.
"It was this 75-year-old main building - where Scouts, Cubs, Joeys and Venturers regularly met - that was tragically destroyed in a fire last March," Cr Williams said.
"What followed was a groundswell of support. Council made a donation and the community rallied around to help with fundraising, offering goods and services.
"It made me truly proud to be part of this wonderful Redlands Coast community."
