REDLANDS MP Kim Richards has encouraged prep to year 9 students to register for the 14th Premier's Reading Challenge.
Meanwhile Capalaba MP Don Brown has called for adults to take part in the volunteer reading program to help students build a love of reading.
Ms Richards said more than 181,000 students from 1012 schools and 388 early childhood education and care services took part in the challenge last year, reading more than 2.46 million books.
"We know literacy is a powerful tool which gives children the best start at school but also builds a solid foundation that shapes every aspect of their lives," she said.
Ms Richards said suggested book titles in Indonesian and Italian would be available for the first time this year along with Chinese, French, German and Japanese as well as English.
"Students who speak English as an additional language or dialect, along with Indigenous students, may choose to read books in their first language," she said.
"Students with disability or those who do not speak or read Standard Australian English at home can engage with books such as those in large print, braille or audio."
The challenge runs until August 23 for prep to year 9 students, with children who are home schooled also welcome to participate. Children in early childhood education can take part from August 12 to 23.
Mr Brown said up to 3000 volunteers would be trained to go into schools after the Palaszczuk government had re-launched the Queensland Ready Reading Volunteering Program last year.
"We actively encourage reading every day and our Ready Reading volunteers help us promote a school community that values the benefits and enjoyment of being avid and skilled readers," Mr Brown said.
"The Palaszczuk government has invested $1.5 million over three years in the program, which has seen 1208 people volunteer to support schools in developing their students' reading skills.
"I encourage mums, dads, carers, grandparents and community members to register their interest with Volunteering Queensland."
Schools can register to join the Premier's Reading challenge at readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au and register for Ready Reading via volunteeringqld.org.au or emailing Ready.Reading@qed.qld.gov.au.
