FIVE athletes from an Ormiston powerlifting club have been named Queensland champions at a recent state competition.
Powerlifters from Ormiston Private Health Club competed at the Australian Powerlifting League state titles in Clontarf on Sunday, June 9, with several athletes coming away as state champions and record holders.
Coming off the back of a medal-winning performance at the Anzac International in April, Peter Church won his weight class in bench press and deadlift in both the Open and Masters categories.
Along the way, he beat his own national record in the Masters deadlift three times.
"He added 10 kilograms to it on the day. Truly amazing stuff," coach Kevin Rogers said.
Also winning their age and weight classes were Debra Johnston and Cody Miller in bench press and Anderson Janes in deadlift.
Rogers - who dropped from the 67.5 kilogram to the 56 kilogram class for the competition - also won the Open and Masters titles for bench press and deadlift.
He was just five kilograms off the national featherweight bench press record.
Club members will now prepare for the national powerlifting titles in August.
Members would be chasing more national records up against some of the country's best athletes.
Rogers will also be preparing for Ormiston Private Health Club to host Powerlifting Australia's Schools National Bench Press Championships in mid-September.
The club is based at Ormiston College.
