A TEAM of young rugby players will head to Townsville next month to represent Redlands Rugby League Club at the annual Laurie Spina Shield.
Fifteen eager Under 11 players will represent the club at the two-day carnival in July.
Now in its 23rd year, the Laurie Spina Shield is co-ordinated by the North Queensland Cowboys and is one of Australia's largest junior rugby carnivals.
Rather than competition, it focuses on fair play and participation.
Team manager Nicole McGarrity said the boys had worked hard and were dedicated to their sport.
"They are all very passionate and have a great love for their footy," she said.
"It will be a great team bonding experience for them and since they will be playing against top teams from a lot of clubs, (it will be) a great introduction to competition."
It would be the furthest a lot of the players had travelled for competition.
Ms McGarrity said the club was seeking donations and sponsorships to help send the boys, along with five coaching staff, to Townsville from July 18 to 20.
