A REDLANDS resident hit with a fine has warned people thinking of parking their cars at popular roadside sale spots.
In the last three months, Redland City Council issued 11 parking infringement notices at sites in Victoria Point and Sheldon which are commonly used by people to display cars they want to sell.
Eight fines were issued for cars parked on Cleveland-Redland Bay Road near Victoria Point State High School, with three more handed out for cars parked near the roundabout at the intersection of Taylor and Boundary roads.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said she was displaying her car on the nature strip at Victoria Point earlier this year when she received an infringement notice.
She said cars were usually parked well away from the road and did not obstruct walkways or bikeways.
The strip was a well-known area for locals to put cars on display when they were up for sale or to look for a vehicle when they were in the market to buy.
"It's an easy selection of people to fine," she said.
Everyone knows that's where you go to look for cars.
Her infringement notice quoted a Queensland traffic regulation under which people could not stop on a bicycle path, footpath or dividing strip, or a nature strip adjacent to a length of road in a built-up area.
Under Queensland law, the maximum fine is for doing so is $2669.
A Redland City Council spokesperson said parking a car advertising that it was for sale or hire in council-controlled areas was also prohibited.
The resident said to be fined for infringements like hers seemed to be under-handed.
"I think as a community we need a notice that says not to park there," the resident said.
"It's such a common spot to sell cars and people aren't aware of the rules."
The resident said that during election campaigns, cars and trailers with signs were often parked in the same areas.
The council spokesperson said motor vehicles with election signs also needed to comply with parking requirements.
Signs on motor vehicles must also meet requirements of police and the Transport Department and signs must not be placed in a way that would make the vehicle non-roadworthy or defective.
The resident said the issuing of infringements drew attention to areas like another Cleveland-Redland Bay Road nature strip that was often used as overflow parking during events at Victoria Point State High School.
In Thornlands, cars also often park on the nature strip outside the Pinklands sporting grounds on weekends.
