RECREATIONAL boaties can learn how to operate a VHF radio during a course offered by the Redland Bay Coast Guard.
The three-hour Australian Waters Qualification radio course will be delivered on Saturday, July 20.
A Coast Guard spokesman said the qualification licenced users to legally operate a VHF marine radio in local waters.
"In other words, it is mandatory for the operator to hold a licence," he said.
"The qualification also enables the operator to apply for a Maritime Mobile Service Identity. When this number is programmed into the radio it activates the Digital Selective Calling. This enables the operator to automatically alert the authorities when there is an emergency."
The course costs $70.
