A FIRE trail to provide an escape route on Russell Island in case of a disaster will be designed with money from the state government.
Infrastructure Minister Cameron Dick said the Redland City Council would receive part of a $50,000 grant through the Queensland Disaster Resilience Fund.
Redlands MP Kim Richards said the money for Russell Island would be used to design a fire trail along Glendale Road.
The need for more fire trails on Russell Island was identified in a 2017 Queensland Fire and Emergency Services report after dangerous fires hit both Russell and Macleay islands the previous year.
Redland City Council asked QFES to review issues like fire vulnerability, maintenance, access trails and community understanding after the blazes which terrified residents.
The remainder of the $50,000 grant would go to Sunshine Coast Regional Council to install telemetered level gauges on Obi Obi Creek at Maleny.
Ms Richards said that increasing disaster resilience was vital for social and economic wellbeing.
"These projects won't just protect our region from damage and reduce future restoration costs, they'll also improve public safety," she said.
Mr Dick said the QDRF would be delivered annually across four rounds.
"As a state, we need to do everything we can to stand strong against extreme weather events," Mr Dick said.
"This is a significant investment in our future, with the added benefit of creating more jobs for regional Queensland."
