A government funded project worth about $1.1 million has transformed a 20-year-old library at Victoria Point State High School into a 21st century learning centre.
Named Moongalba after the Quandamooka word for gathering place, the centre features a tertiary-style lecture room, collaboration spaces, open plan classrooms, break rooms, interactive learning tools and a new book hiring system.
Principal Scot Steinhardt said the centre, which took just three months to build after several years of planning, would change the way students learned.
"It gives us the opportunity to provide 21st century education to our young people in the Redlands," he said.
"This centre sends a real message to the students at Victoria Point State High School that people in this community care about them.
"I have been at this school for five-and-a-half years now and ever since I got here this was a project that was well and truly on my agenda."
Deputy principal Brooke Plauschin said renovations incorporated the exterior walls and roof of the existing library.
Mr Steinhardt said the school added to the government contribution to make further improvements to the facility, including landscaping work in the adjoining courtyard.
The centre will be a fully bookable space, allowing teachers to run group activities.
"There are no permanent classes in the centre," Ms Plauschin said.
"The idea is teachers will book it because they want to enhance the learning experience of the children.
"They will explain through their booking what they want to achieve and why they want to use this space instead of a regular classroom."
The centre is currently only open to students for study sessions before and after school and during break times.
It will open for classes in term four.
"We have to realise libraries with rows and rows of books is a little bit old school," Mr Steinhardt said.
"If students need to research something they can do it on their phones.
"We do not need a library full of books printed in 1985."
Former students and members of the parents and citizens committee have visited the centre since its grand opening on Tuesday, September 10.
Victoria Point State High School's next project is a $2 million upgrade to the school hall.
