TRANSLINK and Brisbane City Council will soon finalise the conditions of a proposed trial to allow pet dogs on ferries and City Cats.
Redlanders who use the services are being urged to have their say on how the trial should run with an online survey.
Only certified guide, hearing and assistance dogs are allowed to travel on TransLink water services as well as busses and trains.
This is at odds with Redlands ferry services like SeaLink, Stradbroke Flyer and Amity Trader where pets are allowed on board provided their owners comply with certain conditions.
Dogs on SeaLink ferries to North Stradbroke Island and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands must be clean, dry and restrained with a lead and wear a muzzle.
Those on board Strabroke Flyer Gold Cats should be well behaved and restrained, with owners to follow the directions of crew members.
Amity Trader requires dogs to be restrained and on a lead at all times.
A SeaLink spokeswoman said allowing pets on ferries was a necessity because it was the only way they could be transported to the islands.
She said locals and tourists regularly travelled with their pet dogs on board.
"Since our ferries have been running we have always allowed pets," the spokeswoman said.
"In October 2018 we brought in that dogs had to be muzzled along with further guidelines.
"On our passenger ferries animals need to be out the back of the ferry in the open air section and are not allowed to be on seats.
"Generally people abide by the rules. If they are told that the dog needs to be outside on the passenger ferries then they stay outside."
Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a fine balance had to be struck between passenger comfort and making room for pet dogs on Brisbane ferries.
"There are many places around the world that allow dogs on public transport so I think now is the right time for a trial on ferries to see what people think about it," he said.
Survey questions range from what size of pet dog should be allowed and how many should be on board at one time.
