Ancient Hindu festival celebrated at Cleveland

REDLANDERS celebrated an ancient Hindu festival with cultural activities and traditional food at Cleveland last month.

The festival, called Onam, celebrates India's rice harvest season and is said to coincide with the arrival of King Mahabali's spirit to Kerala in the country's south.

About 200 people joined in with a program of indoor games and dined out on Onam Sadya, a vegetarian feast with over a dozen dishes.

The most popular activities were a tug of war and a lime and spoon race.

The celebrations, hosted by the Redland Malayali Association, were held at Star of the Sea Catholic Church Hall, Cleveland.

Onam was celebrated from Sunday, September 1 to Friday, September 13 this year.
