Leonard Warwick's life was destroyed by the "scandalous" behaviour of police investigators who had closed minds about the identity of the Sydney Family Court bomber, his trial has been told.
"We will be naming people and they are still alive," Warwick's solicitor Alan Conolly said on Monday.
"What have the police done about it? Nothing."
Warwick, 72, has pleaded not guilty to four murders and 20 other offences relating to seven events between February 1980 and July 1985, allegedly stemming from a drawn-out custody battle with his ex-wife.
Mr Conolly argued the case should be thrown out after the prosecutor last week closed the Crown case at the long-running, judge-alone NSW Supreme Court trial before Justice Peter Garling.
Mr Conolly is submitting there is no case to answer if the judge accepts the Crown case at its highest, contending the evidence is "inherently incredible" and the "product of a disorderly mind".
"When it comes to the evidence in vital matters, there is no evidence," he said.
"It doesn't get there.
"The evidence on DNA has all sorts of problems including gross police incompetence, including the work of the government analytical laboratory as being well below appropriate standards.
"Ultimately the handling of exhibits is an extraordinary story of mismanagement."
There was "not a scintilla of acceptable evidence" that Warwick had committed extreme violence at any point in his life, Mr Conolly said.
The Crown contended there was a link between the crimes and the matters his client had before the Family Court.
Describing the proposition as "absurd", Mr Conolly said Warwick followed the "processes of the courts" between 1979 and 1986 and "what happened in those courts was very satisfactory.
"Where orders were made against Mr Warwick, they were entirely predictable."
Since 1980, the former firefighter had lived with the "scandalous behaviour" of NSW police investigators who had closed minds.
"Times have changed but the effect has been to destroy Mr Warwick's life."
The Crown claimed all seven events happened when Warwick was off-duty, but that "had been proved wrong", Mr Conolly said.
The first crime had involved Warwick's brother-in-law, Stephen Blanchard, who was shot in the head in 1980.
His body, with bricks attached around his waist, was found in a national park creek days after he was reported missing.
Mr Conolly referred to evidence of an expert who said a firefighter would be expected to tie much better knots than those on ropes around the body.
"A boy cub would know the way in which Mr Blanchard's body was tied was by somebody who knew nothing about knots," the solicitor said.
Warwick is also charged with the 1980 shooting murder of Justice David Opas; the bombing of Justice Richard Gee's home and of the Family Court building in Parramatta in 1984; and, in the same year, the bombing of the home of Justice Ray Watson in which his wife Pearl was killed.
In 1985, he allegedly set off a bomb that ripped apart a Jehovah's Witnesses hall, killing Graham Wykes and injuring 13 people, part of the congregation offering support to his ex-wife.
The no-case application is continuing.
