THE Capalaba Lions Club has donated $10,000 to the Mater Private Hospital Redland Auxiliary in memory of one of its beloved members.
David Constable died earlier this month after a long battle with his health and member Mary Ericksen said he would be sorely missed.
"He was the most wonderful human being," she said. "It's been a real blow for all of us."
The cheque was presented at the Auxiliary's Christmas market on Saturday. Among the guests were Mr Constable's son Glenn and grandson Isaac, as well as Lions Club and Mater Auxiliary members.
Glenn said his father had spent 30 years with the Lions, both in central Queensland and Capalaba.
"It's in his honour that we're presenting the cheque to the Mater," he said.
Mrs Ericksen said the club had intended to give $5000 to the hospital but had doubled its donation after Mr Constable's death.
"We wanted to honour all the wonderful work he did for the Lions," she said.
Mr Constable had been at the Mater in South Brisbane for about four months and his family and friends were grateful for the care he had received.
The money had been raised by the club throughout the year.
Judith Johnstone from the Mater Private Hospital Redland Auxiliary said the group was thrilled to receive the donation.
"This is amazing, absolutely amazing," she said.
The money would be put towards items on the Mater's wish list.
"At the moment we're in the process of purchasing love seats - they're chairs for people staying overnight with palliative care patients."
