Dog show to help firies battling Queensland blazes

Dogs Queensland, in conjunction with the Beaudesert Kennel Club, is behind the event, which has seen 1891 entries come in from across the globe.

It's made it the second largest dog show in Queensland this year, surpassed only by the Royal Queensland Show.

Co-organiser Chris Woodrow said there was a large number of "token entries" from places like Europe and New Zealand, but they could still expect to see 700 to 800 dogs at the Kalbar Showgrounds this weekend.

"It's going to be the biggest one day dog show in Australia for over 15 years,' he said.

"Entries cost $10 so we're easily going to raise $20,000 to give to the rural firefighters."

The idea of the event was born following the Canungra bushfires in September.

In addition to the cash, organisers have also gathered food supplies that will go directly to firefighters tackling blazes in the region.

'We've got eight judges, six are flying from interstate and one from New Zealand, all at their own expense," Mr Woodrow said.

"We could have held it at our main showground in Durack but we decided we wanted to have it in Kalbar so we're supporting the local communities as well.

"Locals can come and see what's happening and the Kalbar Show Society is doing the catering.

"Our members from Warwick are making the effort to get their despite their usual roads being cut off so we have a lot of people who are putting themselves out to even get there."

The event will be free for spectators, kicking off at 8am at Kalbar Showgrounds
