Whether listening to music and dancing, taking cooking classes, or swimming in the pool, Spencer Rabjohns is achieving his personal best.
Since finishing school last year, the 18-year-old from Redlands has continued to access supports with assistance from the National Disability Insurance Scheme to help build on his learning skills and make friends.
Spencer, who has autism, is undertaking a community program where he is taking part in cooking, numeracy and literacy class, dancerise, attending local libraries, and music therapy.
Mum Teena Rabjohns said her family had noticed how Spencer was becoming more confident and independent.
"Having NDIS funding has allowed Spence to gain new skills and it has given him a sense of independence going to his place of learning each day.
"Having access to the NDIS gives him and us peace of mind that he is learning new skills to cope out in the community.
"With both parents working five days a week, NDIS funding gives us the comfort of knowing he is being cared for and he's continuing his learning which we certainly didn't want to see stop after school," Ms Rabjohns said.
When Spencer is not busy undertaking community programs, he can be found improving on his fitness in the pool or at the gym.
"He is achieving his goals in his swimming life, a sport he is passionate about, where he has experienced success on a state and national level for Special Olympics with Swimming Queensland and Swimming Australia.
"Through all this, both ourselves and Spence have made some wonderful friends and great support networks."
Spencer received help to apply for and implement his NDIS funding from Carers Queensland's NDIS local area coordination partner for the Capalaba area.
Ms Rabjohns said she was looking forward to seeing Spencer gain more experience, self-confidence and growth.
"Having a loved one with a disability has a huge impact on families and with the help of NDIS funding, it is certainly making an impact for the greater good.
"We can't wait to watch Spence continue to learn new skills - which take time of course - but it's so rewarding when even little things are achieved."
Carers Queensland can support people in finding out how to apply for NDIS funding and to help get started with the NDIS.
If you have a disability but are not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can also help you identify and link to support options.
