Pet dogs on TransLink ferries trial brings conditions in line with Redlands

Many of the conditions for riding with pet dogs are similar to those already in place on Redlands' SeaLink, Stradbroke Flyer and Amity Trader ferries.

Handlers are allowed to bring two dogs on board from today but they must be kept outside the ferry cabin at the rear of the vessel and restrained with a muzzle and lead.

It is also the handlers' responsibility to clean up any mess the dog makes while on board, keep them under control at all times and remove all waste from the vessel.

Transport minister Mark Bailey said dogs were permitted to travel on board City Cats during off-peak times from Monday to Friday and all weekend.

"This is something Brisbane residents and visitors have wanted to try for a while," he said.

"We've seen dogs allowed on public transport in cities across the world, including Sydney and Melbourne, so why not give it a go right here in Brisbane."

RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty said muzzles were made a part of the trial to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all passengers.

"We believe the dogs on ferries trial is steering Brisbane towards pet friendly policies of the like seen across other major cities in the world," he said.

"However, it is important to note that this is indeed a trial, and people are encouraged to provide their feedback on terms and conditions."

Mr Bailey said the a fine balance had to be struck between passenger comfort and safety, and making space for dogs on ferries.

"For many dogs and their owners, this will be the first time travelling via ferry, so we're introducing a number of conditions to make sure everyone is safe when they travel," he said.

Redlands ferry services allow dogs on board so they can be transported to and from the islands with visitors and residents.

All dogs are required to be restrained while travelling on SeaLink, Stradbroke Flyer and Amity Trader ferries.
