A HIGHLIGHT of the past year for the community at Faith Lutheran College Redlands was when two teams of year 7 students competed in the World Education Robotics Championshps in Shanghai, China.

The students enjoyed meeting competitors from other countries, such as China, the United Kingdom, Panama, Mexico, Hong Kong, Lebanon and the United States.

eLearning co-ordinator David Hartshorn heads up the robotics team and has been running robotics programs at Faith for six years.

"[Students] had this amazing experience to see other cultures, it was a great adventure," Mr Hartshorn says.

"We are looking forward to giving this opportunity to others next year."

The China trip followed the school's earlier success in the Australian Open Robotics Competition, held at Redeemer Lutheran College.

That competition attracted about 30 teams from Sydney, Melbourne and China.

Faith placed one team second and one team third. Also in 2019, Mr Hartshorn started a new program using Krypton 6 robots.

"These are cutting edge technologies to use in the class room and allow some students to engage with virtual classes at other schools," Mr Hartshorn says.

"Schools from all over the world are involved in these programs.

"The goal for the team is to program the robot to correctly undertake a task, such as correctly follow a line and then do a task such as lift a ball and move it.

"Because it's new, they challenge themselves to do something out of the ordinary, see other students from other schools do and they find that inspiring. It also developed friendships between the team mates."

The college's robotics program will expand this year. Faith Lutheran College offers an educational journey from prep to year 12, allowing students to make lifelong friends and learn in a supportive and Christian community.

The college is also launching a new and improved sporting program in 2020 and offers a lot of extracurricular opportunities and encourage STEM learning.

While the college stretches across two campuses, it strives to operate as a single community.
