REDLANDS LNP candidate Henry Pike says children are sweltering in non-air conditioned classrooms as school resumes today in temperatures of up to 30 degrees.
Mr Pike slammed the government for failing to install air conditioning in all Redlands classrooms, but Labor MP Kim Richards has hit back, saying the LNP's record for investment in Redlands schools was abysmal.
It came after Education Minister Grace Grace said 143 contracts had been awarded under the government's $50 million plan to install air conditioning in 300 schools in the hottest parts of the state over the summer school holidays.
About half the schools had been completed in time for school to start.
No Redland schools were included in the plan.
Mr Pike said it was disgraceful that Redland kids were sweltering in second-rate classrooms.
"In classrooms without air conditioning things can get pretty unbearable for students and teachers alike," he said.
"The Palaszczuk government isn't even meeting their own modest targets for the roll-out of air-conditioning."
Earlier this month, Ms Grace said her department was on target to spend the allocated $50 million this financial year.
Ms Richards said air conditioning for schools on the islands had been finished and audits of mainland schools - which had air conditioning to varying extents - were done last year.
She did not respond to questions about how many schools in the Redlands were not fully air conditioned.
"As we kick off into 2020 I will be continuing to work with the minister and the department to review the audit results and ensure that all of my schools are planned for air conditioning sooner than the LNP's eight year plan," she said.
Ms Richards said the government had invested millions into Redland schools last year, including $1.2 million for Russell Island State School and more than $3 million for upgrading the Victoria Point State High School library and expanding its hall.
Funds had also gone towards a $9 million learning building for Redlands District Special School and new classrooms for Redland Bay and Bay View state schools.
It came as independent school Redlands College received a grant of $11,000 from the federal government's Local Schools Community Fund to put towards the cost of air-conditioning its hall.
Temperatures in the Redlands are expected to peak in the low 30s this week.
