Brown, Laming stoush continues after Coolnwynpin State School chaplain service cut

Mr Laming hit out at Mr Brown for gutting chaplaincy at the school but Mr Brown said chaplains were federally-funded.

"I have no involvement on whether a school has or has not got a chaplain, that is a matter for the school," he said.

"Andrew Laming can't claim credit for funding a chaplain six months ago and then try to blame someone else when the funding stops or is cut by him. He can't have it both ways."

Mr Laming said in 2019, six months of chaplaincy funding for the school had come from the federal government's Local Schools Community Fund initiative.

"The funds (for 2020) were allocated from Canberra to the Education Queensland South East Regional office on January 21 this year in time for the new school year.

"Unfortunately, the money has not been disbursed to the school and Coolnwynpin's chaplaincy position was axed."

But a spokesperson for the Education Department said Coolnwynpin State School had received $17,000 through the Local Schools Community Fund in February, including $10,000 for chaplaincy services and $7000 for a wellbeing space for students.

"The school determined that this funding would be insufficient to continue the chaplaincy service and will be seeking to change the scope of their project to support student wellbeing in other ways."

The spokesperson said all Queensland schools had also been invited to apply for funding through the National Schools Chaplaincy Program for 2020-22 but Coolnwynpin's application had been unsuccessful.

"Allocations were made with consideration of factors such as the continuity of service provision, full-time equivalent student enrolments, socio-economic disadvantage, geographic location and other characteristics of the school community."

It came after Mr Laming was accused of political point-scoring last year after the federal MP issued an ultimatum for Mr Brown to top up the chaplaincy funding by the end of school holidays.
