THE Stradbroke Island community is mourning the death of community icon and renowned author Beryl Moore.
Known for her tireless fundraising work during her time as president of Point Lookout Bowls Club, Ms Moore died on January 30, 2020 aged 102.
She famously wrote an entire book titled Island Eden - Point Lookout and its Pioneers with a pen she found washed up on Frenchman's Beach.
It was published in 1993 and launched the start of Ms Moore's writing career, with a book of poems and a story about her mother Elizabeth Smith in the decades following.
She bought the only store at Point Lookout with husband Ron during the 1950s, some seven years after the couple fell in love with the island while on holiday in 1943.
Friend Ann Armstrong said she had spent time working at the shop - known as Moore's Store - where she sold everything from ice cream to kerosene.
Goods were shipped from North Quay in Brisbane to Amity, where they were loaded onto a truck and taken to Point Lookout.
Ms Armstrong said Ms Moore was a pillar of the community.
"She was a young woman when I first came to know her," she said.
"I worked in her shop every school holiday. When she got old I looked after her until I left Stradbroke.
"She was very well known and a stalwart of the community. She was Straddie."
Ms Armstrong said Ms Moore stayed positive after moving to Nareeba Moopi Moopi Pa Aged Care Hostel at Dunwich.
"She was cared for there until her death at 102 years and nine months on January 30, 2020," she said.
"She is buried at the Dunwich cemetery under a tree with a view of the Bay. She kept her vow never to leave."
