CLEVELAND and North Stradbroke Island Anzac commemorations are among the latest events to be called off due to coronavirus, following an "extraordinarily difficult" decision by RSL Queensland.
The dawn service, commemorative marches and main services will not go ahead, Redlands RSL sub branch president Alan Harcourt confirmed.
"We are hoping that the public understands and supports this decision," a Redlands RSL statement said.
"Members of the public are more than welcome to still pay their respects and lay a wreath at the cenotaph any time of the day if they wish.
"The Redlands RSL venue will be open from 10am on Anzac Day.
"A reminder though that anyone feeling unwell or is experiencing flu like conditions to please stay at home."
Deputy president Ian Gray said it was the first time the service had been cancelled since its inception.
RSL Queensland issued advice on Monday urging branches to cancel their commemorations.
It came after the Australian government instructed event organisers to cancel all public events or gatherings with more than 500 people.
"Our older veterans are particularly at risk from this virus, so we believe this is the responsible thing to do to ensure their health and wellbeing," RSL Queensland president Tony Ferris said.
He said RSL Queensland was considering options for commemorating the anniversary without placing veterans and the general public at risk.
"Regardless of the form this year's Anzac Day commemorations take, we will always remember the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of our Defence forces, past and present."
Opposition leader Deb Frecklington said she acknowledged that the decision had been extraordinarily difficult.
"Community safety must always come first with decisions based on best possible scientific and health advice," she said.
"Queenslanders will always remember the sacrifice, dedication and bravery of all those who have served.
"The way we commemorate Anzac Day may change this year, but the enduring spirit of the Anzacs will forever be honoured by Queenslanders."
