MAYORAL candidate Claire Richardson says she would support a ban on candidates handing out flyers or how to vote cards at polling booths during future elections.
Some Facebook commenters also supported the move, saying candidates "throwing flyers" in voters' faces was "beyond annoying" and "a waste of materials".
Another social media user said election materials helped them make their decision when voting.
Candidates would still have display signs and election materials available for voters at pre-polling centres.
Others said the election should be called off altogether to limit the spread of coronavirus, after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a ban on non-essential indoor gatherings of greater than 100 people from Wednesday.
"The election needs to be postponed or else they send everyone on the electoral roll a postal vote," one commenter said.
Others said online voting would be a better way to go.
It comes as mayor Karen Williams heads to Brisbane for a meeting about how the election will go ahead.
Ms Richardson said before the candidate agreement had been written, she had requested the Electoral Commission Queensland to take steps to minimise risk to voters, including banning candidates and their volunteers from polling booths and handing out election materials.
"Adopting these measures will assist in providing a level playing field for all candidates in and around the polling stations," she said.
"Personally, I have always found the presence of large numbers of candidates and volunteers at polling stations to be somewhat intimidating to voters, hence I would support the adoption of similar arrangements to the above at future elections too."
