There's been some big whiting flushed out of the upper reaches of rivers and creeks over the past few weeks. Top spots have been the mouth of smaller creeks on the Broadwater, Jumpinpin and Pumicestone Passage.
Top spots include Tingalpa Creek, Ageston Sand in the Logan River and the Council Chambers in the Nerang rivers. Flathead is also a species worth targeting, the best numbers have been around the southern Bay islands and on the edge of main channels leading towards Jacobs Well as well as the banks north of the Brisbane River to the airport.
The Brisbane River has been one of the hot spots again this week, provided you fish at night. Threadfin and mulloway have dominated catches, there have also been good numbers of quality bream around the Sunken Wall and Luggage Point.
Mud crabs have been in good numbers at Jumpinpin, especially in the smaller backwater channels. Sand crabs have been harder to find, the better catches came from Pumicestone Passage.
In the surf, dart is biting on most beaches all day and night, yabbies, pippies or worms are the best baits.
Chopper tailor has come on the bite in the morning but not at the crack of dawn, best catches have been a few hours later - around 7 - 8am.
The better tailor has been caught at night as the moon rises and when it is directly overhead.
Plenty of prawns have been caught, most productive locations include Nudgee, a few hundred metres off Redland Bay boat ramp and from the Saltworks south to Giant's Grave. There's also been a few in deeper holes throughout the Pine and Caboolture rivers.
Offshore there have been good catches of Spanish mackerel, trolling bait grounds, shallow reefs or exposed rock areas has been the best technique.
There were a few good pearlies caught from 50 fathoms on larger cut baits or live slimies.
There are still a few dolphinfish hanging around FADs and buoys, they're a bit shy to bite, once again live slimies have been doing the trick.
In the freshwater, fish have been hard to find, those getting the best results have been finding bass mid-water and dropping vibration lures or live shrimp on them or targeting yellowbelly in amongst submerged timber.
