COUNCIL crews will conduct hazard reduction burns in the Redlands this week as preparations begin for next fire season.
Burns are scheduled for Greater Glider Conservation Area near Redruth Road at Alexandra Hills on Wednesday and Bayview Conservation Area near German Church Road at Mount Cotton on Thursday.
Both locations will be closed to the public during the works.
Conservation fire management officer Adam Pearce said council crews would conduct a further three burns at Bayview Conservation Area over the coming weeks in conjunction with QFES, forcing the area to close again on April 28 and 30.
QFES regional manager Wayne Waltisbuhl said planned burns were conducted to remove ground fuels and reduce hazards ahead of fire season.
"If something happens in an area during that time, there will not be enough fuel to sustain the fire or there will only be a very mild fire that we can put out quickly," he said.
Council has advised residents in the vicinity of a planned burn site to prevent smoke from entering their home by closing windows and doors.
Mr Waltisbuhl said crews would monitor wind direction to minimise the impact on nearby residents.
"At the moment we have some pretty stable conditions so that does help us a lot," he said.
"Everybody is advised of what it is and the necessity of doing it and we do everything within our power to make sure the smoke is gone by night-time."
Burn dates are subject to change pending weather conditions.
