FORMER builder Robert McNabb is back on the tools at his Sheldon home after securing the services of support worker through the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Mr McNabb, 64, said he had found it difficult to work around his 10-acre property after being diagnosed with a neurological condition and a visual impairment.
"Physically, I was tired all the time, and frustrated I could not do half of what I did before, meaning I could not do my household chores anymore or dress myself, let alone attempt any projects in the garage or yard," he said.
Now, with the help of a support worker, Mr McNabb has turned into home handyman, completing things like woodworking and concreting tasks on his property.
"We got the range hood up in the kitchen, new flyscreens on all the doors and windows, all things I would have considered as weekly or monthly maintenance issues," he said.
"I am sure I don't have to tell anyone about the sense of accomplishment of even trying to do something yourself, but the full-blown sense of accomplishment of knowing your limitations and still getting the job done with a dedicated support worker, I believe you call that chuffed.
"It is the best feeling in the world."
Robert said he was thankful for the help he received while applying for the NDIS.
"The NDIS has changed my life, and I can see how much it positively can impact others," he said.
Those with a disability can enquire about the scheme by calling 3565 8600 or contacting Carers Queensland on 1300 999 636.
