Victorians have been confronted with a cold and wet start to May, with the rain and wild wind set to continue.
Central Melbourne was tipped to reach a top of 12C on Friday, marking the first time since the 1960s that the city has had a daily maximum below 13C this early in autumn.
But Laverton in the city's southwest exceeded the 13C mark, hitting 13.2C about 1pm.
Bureau of Meteorology extreme weather meteorologist Dean Narramore said Friday is one of the coldest days Victoria has experienced "in a long time".
"Severe weather is continuing right across the state as temperatures are anywhere from five to 10 degrees below average," he told reporters.
Rain that lashed the state on Thursday continued on Friday.
The city recorded 24mm in the 24 hours to 9am on Thursday, while the eastern and southeastern suburbs recorded close to 40mm. In the subsequent 24 hours, there were falls of 8mm and 15mm respectively.
Some parts of Victoria have also already surpassed the total rainfall they had in 2019.
The Melbourne Olympic Park weather station recorded 374.4 millimetres of rain in 2019. In the first four months of 2020, it has already recorded 400.8mm.
The city's total April rainfall was more than 138mm, making it the wettest April since 1960.
Mr Narramore said rain would continue in waves throughout Friday and into Saturday morning.
Severe weather warnings are also in place for potentially damaging winds of up to 100km/h for coastal areas, the alpine region, the Wimmera, West and South Gippsland on Friday, as well as for Melbourne's eastern suburbs overnight.
"We could also see a storm surge impact through those bayside areas," Mr Narramore noted, saying suburbs stretching from St Kilda to the Mornington Peninsula would cop gusts.
Even fiercer winds of up to 120 km/h are likely along the South Gippsland coast between midnight on Friday and 9am Saturday.
Low temperatures have delivered snow to the state's ski resorts, with Falls Creek, Mount Buller and Mount Hotham expected to see as much as 40cm of snow by Saturday as the temperature falls below zero.
