POLICE have released vision of the rescue of a 40-year-old man found in the ocean after treading water for about two hours, having run into trouble while kayaking kilometres off shore at Wellington Point this afternoon.
Police commenced a search and rescue operation using Water Police, Coast Guard and Polair after the man contacted friends about midday saying he was having difficulties about three kilometres off shore.
The sea was choppy, temperatures cool and winds were at about 25 knots.
Polair2 commenced a search with the crew finding a partially submerged kayak, with a pair of white outrigger style floats keeping it from sinking completely.
Additional aerial support was called and Polair2 continued a grid search for the missing man, who was now confirmed as being in the water.
Polair2 spotted an oar approximately half a mile from the kayak.
Using drift trend from the kayak to the oar as confirmation of search pattern, Polair2 continued searching and found the man at around 1.35pm.
Police vision showed the man clinging to what looks like a small piece of his kayak.
Polair2 relayed the man's coordinates to the Coast Guard and hovered overhead until they arrived and rescued him from the water.
He was transported to shore for medical assessment.
UPDATE 1.45pm
A KAYAKER missing off Wellington Point has been found.
A police spokesperson said the man had been found in the water at about 1.40pm and was being helped to shore, nearly two hours after he was reported missing to police.
PolAir, as well as police and Coast Guard vessels, had helped in the search.
The man is believed to be safe and well.
EARLIER
POLICE are searching for a kayaker believed to be missing off Wellington Point.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said police had received a call shortly before 12pm and begun the search.
At least one Coast Guard vessel is also believed to be involved.
It comes as crowds have flocked to Wellington Point and King Island to take advantage of the sunny weather and relaxing of travel restrictions over the long weekend.
