RUSSELL Island resident Hilary Anderson has won Adventist Aged Care's nurse of the year award for her work at the company's Victoria Point retirement village.
Ms Anderson, who has spent about 32 years in the nursing industry, said she felt incredibly humbled to receive the award.
"I have nursed in various different places in Victoria and Queensland, mainly in aged care," she said.
"I have loved nursing from the day I started.
"The best part is the contact and interaction with residents and forming friendships and relationships."
Ms Anderson said she had never worked in a better place than Adventist Retirement Village at Victoria Point.
"It was the best thing I ever did, coming to Queensland and coming to work here," she said.
"The staff are wonderful and so is the management. Their philosophy flows through the whole place."
Partner Don Partington said the hard yards she put into getting to work from the island and back was a reflection of her dedication.
She rides a scooter, ferry and drives a car before arriving at work each morning and repeats the dose in the afternoon.
"She really likes old folk," Mr Partington said. "She is always bandaging them up, looking after them and quizzing them about their medications and how they are going with them.
"She is very good with wounds, the best I have ever seen. She puts in plenty of heart and really deserves the award.
"Even out of working hours she is right into it."
