REDLAND Hospital has been celebrating its nurses and midwives in the last few weeks during a year that has been dedicated to both professions.
The World Health Organisation named 2020 the year of the nurse and midwife to coincide with Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday anniversary but it has become even more appropriate in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bayside Health Nursing and Midwifery Services director Rhonda Mead said International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day, which took place last month, had been an opportunity to showcase the role staff played in the community.
"This year especially I think many people have developed a greater understanding and appreciation for the work our health professionals do," Ms Mead said.
She said Bayside Health Service Midwife of the Year Rachel Roe and Nurse of the Year Rose Sargent had shown a range of desirable qualities in delivering patient care.
"Rachel has helped deliver hundreds of babies during her nine years here as a clinical midwife at Redland Hospital, and Rose, who has spent more than 17 years on our surgical ward, is known for her compassion for her patients and as an inspiration to her colleagues," she said.
"We are extremely proud of Rachel and Rose and of all our nurses and midwives at Redland Hospital and across our health service, who lead the way with amazing care of not only our patients but their families as well."
Ms Mead thanked the community for the love and support shown to staff over the last several months.
"We have faced challenges unlike any other but to receive so many letters, cards, posters, drawings and other kind messages has meant so much to all our nurses and midwives."
