REDLAND councillor Tracey Huges has taken legal action against federal MP Andrew Laming over allegations that Mr Laming made concerning the theft and vandalism of signs during the local government election.
Mr Laming has apologised on Facebook, saying an allegation he made was incorrect.
In his apology, he said that after his allegation was made, damage to signs stopped but he accepted that might have been circumstantial.
Cr Huges said she sent the information for legal review after which defamation action began.
She said Mr Laming's campaign was hurtful to her and her family.
"I felt the need to defend myself with a costly but ultimately successful defamation claim to which I was happy to accept his apology and sought no financial gain," she said in a statement.
Mr Laming said he was happy to apologise to Cr Huges.
"At the time, there was little option other than to accuse Labor directly," he said. "...I never regret my actions and would do it all again if it protected an independent candidate who was standing up to the Labor Party."
Mr Laming is active on social media and campaigns hard to support fellow conservative candidates in council, state and federal elections.
He has a Facebook and advertising campaign under way backing fellow LNP candidate Henry Pike in an effort to unseat sitting Labor MP Kim Richards in the seat of Redlands.
The seat is a swinger and one the LNP desperately needs to win if it is to beat Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's government at the October state election.
The election will be held on October 31.
The two-term incumbent Labor government is led by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.
She will seek a third term against the Liberal National opposition led by Deb Frecklington.
