WITH costumes, props and even a new Australian flag design, Calvary Christian College students have impressed with a historical expo created during COVID-19 lockdown.

While Year 5 and 6 students were learning from home, they used collaborative online learning tools to plan and deliver a learning project exploring significant events in Australia's history.

As part of their historical inquiry, Year 5 and 6 students designed and created their own expo called Museum in Motion to showcase what they had learned.

Year 6 teacher Nicole O'Donnell said the project highlighted how students and teachers had adapted during the unprecedented changes brought about by COVID-19.

"It really challenged the way we delivered our teaching and learning however the outcomes were way beyond our expectations," she said.

"We are really proud of our students and what they managed to achieve during a period of learning from home."

Displays featured figures including Matthew Flinders, who mapped and circumnavigated Australia in 1774, and women's suffrage movement leader Edith Cowan.

Also featured were Harold Thomas, who designed the Australian Aboriginal flag in 1972, and Dr Victor Chang, a heart surgeon who pioneered modern heart transplantation in 1984.

Year 6 student Hayley Bruce designed a modern take on the national flag which acknowledges Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

She is considering options for submitting her design for consideration as the future national flag.

The expo - which ran over two days - was laid out to adhere to COVID-19 regulations while also capturing the feel of a real museum.

"Exciting outcomes from this unit were seeing the progression of each student's learning journey throughout the term and the potential to take their learnings further," Mrs O'Donnell said.
