ABOUT 4500 people on Russell, Macleay and North Stradbroke islands could be without power until 8pm tonight as crews work to fix a fallen powerline.
Energex spokesman Danny Donald said a powerline had come down at Stapylton about 1pm but the islands had also been affected as they were on a shared network that stretched to Beenleigh.
"We don't have a cause as to why the line has come down," Mr Donald said.
"It has been a really windy day and that can play havoc from time to time but we haven't had a definitive reason in from the crews yet as to why they think the powerline has come down."
Mr Donald said about 4500 customers on Russell, Macleay and North Stradbroke islands had been affected.
He said crews were currently on scene working to fix the issue but power may not return until 8pm this evening.
