The Transition to Secondary School program at Faith Lutheran College is unique within the Redlands, aiming to make the change for new and existing students a fun and engaging learning process.
It begins 12 months before students commence Year 7 and aims to create a familiarity with the people and spaces that allow them to feel secure on their first day of Secondary School.
Through activities focusing on building relationships, both new and existing students develop connections which support them to confidently step into Year 7, ready to reach their potential right from the very start.
"It is made up of four distinct Transition Days where students get to experience different aspects of the Secondary School life and begin to build relationships with key members of the Secondary Team and other students at the college," said Head of Secondary School Stuart Needham.
Faith Lutheran College Redlands is a Prep to Year 12 college and welcomes applications for new students across all year levels.
"Faith aims to support the whole child and the sense of community sets the school apart from others in the Redlands area and the transition process aims to make all students feel welcome to Year 7," said Mr Needham.
Matilda in Year 8 said she enjoyed doing all the activities with her friends.
"I really liked the choice of extra curricular activities and open learning, especially choosing where I sit in the classroom.
"It was good to meet other students at the transitions to get to know them and be able to hang out so they would feel included when school started" she said.
Year 7 student Daniel really enjoyed going to the secondary campus to experience the different subjects.
"It was fun working in the tech shed and using the equipment.
"That's something I'm looking forward to doing again in Year 7," he said.
Daniel also enjoyed being able to play on the playground as "we still like to run around in Year 7".
Peter and Melissa are Year 7 parents who agree their daughter's transition to Secondary School at Faith had been really easy.
"She had some nerves leading up to starting high school, but she was also really excited and I think she felt comfortable due to having had exposure to the Secondary School environment through the transition days that were held in Year 6," said Melissa.
"She settled in very quickly. In Year 7 they also stay in their own classrooms with two teachers for their core subjects and only move around for a few electives.
"I feel this helps them really connect with their classmates and the class teachers get to know the students really well as well which is great."
By the time Michelle's son started his first day of Secondary School he already knew his way around the school grounds, he recognised many teachers and was keen to use the top of the range facilities available.
"Instead of being a bag of nerves on his first day, he was excited to get started and the transition program played a massive part in this," said Michelle.
