A freshwater fisho has had success on the North Pine Dam wall, with a big haul to give others hope they can too get a good catch.

Raymond Kennedy and a friend caught 45 bass between them. They used live shrimp and fished within one kilometre of the club's boat ramp.

There is no doubt that a winter catch of whiting is a goal for most anglers on the bay this year. I've had conflicting reports of varying success rates.

Although some have had success, others are finding these fish a bit more elusive.

Here are some tips if you are still hanging out for a whiting catch this season.

Whiting are a skittish fish and the noise and movement of boat traffic over their winter feeding ground can put them off the bite.

If you are not having much success, fishing the lesser known spots and shore-based fishing can sometimes be more productive.

Another method is to locate sandy patches with a bit of weed.
