ORMISTON hockey player Judy Lobley says she has no plans of hanging up the boots anytime soon despite many of her contemporaries having already retired.
The 69-year-old said she still had her eye in after more than four decades playing for Norths Hockey Club at Ashgrove.
Lobley, a goalkeeper for the DP4 senior women's team, grew up next to Dorrington Park and started playing at the club in the early 1970s before taking a break to care for her two kids.
She returned in the early 1980s and has been going strong ever since.
Her journey to get to the games is perhaps the most astounding part of her longevity, as she does not drive and has to take a train and busses to get to venues on matchday.
Lobley, who has lived in the Redlands for about 40 years, said she treated the two hour trip as a warm up.
"I still have my eye in so while I'm still enjoying it I will keep going," she said.
"As long as I can still do it I will be fine. I have a handicapped daughter so it gives me an outlet too.
"I love the whole atmosphere and the camaraderie in the teams."
In a remarkable feat, the 69-year-old played three 70 minute games back-to-back on grass last month after two goalkeepers pulled out of other teams due to illness.
"If there had been four games, I might have played in all of them because there was a fourth goalie missing too," she said.
"I was a bit sore but then I had a house inspection here (at home) so I had to go out and do the mowing on Sunday afternoon. I think that got the rest of the kinks out."
Her entry into the goalkeeping role was fortuitous and came after stints at left wing and left half when she was younger.
"They were short of goalies so I had a go and I liked it," Ms Lobley said.
She said her team had struggled on the field but she acted as a mentor to younger players coming through the ranks.
"We don't win many games but we are all right," Ms Lobley said.
"We are an older team but there are young ones that come through our team seeing as we are one of the lower ranked sides.
"I am a bit of a mentor to them."
