A GOOD laugh and mutual respect are the key to a long and happy marriage, according to Capalaba residents Keith and Joan Johnson who celebrated their 70th anniversary this month.
The couple - who now have three children, seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren - first met at a dance in Brisbane in 1948.
Mrs Johnson, then Ms Wakefield, instantly caught Mr Johnson's attention.
The attraction was mutual.
Son Gavin said the pair greatly enjoyed each other's company.
"They have become one, really," he said.
"They laugh and have respect for each other."
The couple were married on September 2, 1950 at the Presbyterian Church on Ann Street, Brisbane.
Mr Johnson worked at State Jams at Buranda until it closed down. He then bought the vinegar side of the business and moved it to Capalaba.
Mrs Johnson took up factory work before quitting to keep house and raise her family.
She had a passion for baking and won several prizes for her beloved sponge cakes in the 60s and 70s.
They have lived in Capalaba for nearly two decades.
Highlights of their marriage include annual holidays to Tweed Heads, where Mr Johnson loved to fish.
Gavin said the anniversary had been celebrated during a quiet family gathering.
"The secret they say is to love each other, have trust, and communicate to each other and to be there for one another," he said.
The pair both turned 92 this year.
"They are tough as nails. They get up and push on," Gavin said.
"Dad says he wants a letter from the Queen."
