A NEW satellite hospital is set for the Redlands after the Palaszczuk government announced $40 million in funding this morning.
An Australian first, this new healthcare initiative will mean Queenslanders can access urgent public care closer to home rather than going to hospital.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new satellite hospital will give locals better access to services in their local community.
It is part of a $265 million commitment to deliver seven satellite hospitals across South East Queensland.
"The hospital will be tailored to the needs of the community and can include ambulatory and low acuity day therapy services such as renal dialysis, chemotherapy, complex wound management and urgent care for minor injury and illness.
"These new satellite hospitals will also help provide the healthcare services families need in our rapidly growing outer-urban areas," she said.
Health Minister Steven Miles said the hospitals will provide opportunities to incorporate innovative workforce models and virtual health opportunities.
Oodgeroo Labor candidate Irene Henley welcomed the announcement.
"As a local nurse with over 25 years' experience, I know just how important investing in more and better health services is.
"It will mean patients will have access to services closer to home and will take pressure off nearby major hospitals," she said.
Redlands MP Kim Richards said services offered will be tailored to the community and will include outpatient services and community-based health services such as child and youth health services and aged and frail care services.
"It will also support 116 FTE local construction jobs among 768 FTE jobs across the state," she said.
Springwood MP Mick de Brenni said the hospital would save lives.
"This is great news for families across the region, knowing that they can access public urgent care closer to home," he said.
Capalaba MP Don Brown said the Bayside community was one of the fastest growing in the state and the investment will mean the health system can continue to meet the growing demand for services in the region.
