BOWMAN MP Andrew Laming has accused Labor of doing a secret deal on construction of the new Redland Hospital car park.
In June this year Health Minister Steven Miles said the hospital would receive a long-awaited facelift, with the state and federal governments tipping in more than $50 million to build a five-level car park.
"After taking 15 months to co-fund the Redland Hospital car park, Labor has scratched out a last-minute construction contract with a mystery builder, cutting out any design phase, open market tender, or engagement with local firms who lodged expressions to participate," he said.
Mr Laming said Oodgeroo Labor candidate Irene Henley had blurted the deal out on Facebook, unaware the Health Minister was yet to announce it.
Ms Henley said the tender referred to in her Facebook post was for the temporary car park that will be used while the multi-story car park is being built.
"The construction of the Redland Hospital multi-storey car park has not reached the tender stage yet," she said.
Queensland Health confirmed the car park had not gone out for tender yet.
"This project has not yet reached tender stage and construction will only be able to commence at the completion of the ministerial infrastructure designation process," a health spokesperson said.
A key component of the project was setting up a temporary park to replace spaces that would be lost when construction started.
"Tenders have been called for the temporary car park works and are currently being evaluated. These spaces will be in use until the new facility is built and commissioned," she said.
Mr Laming said that he had quoted industry sources stating the build would cost about $25 million yet the government had come in with a quote of more than $50 million.
"Redlanders simply want a value-for-money job, through an open tender with a proper design phase," Mr Laming said.
Ms Henley said Labor will deliver stage one of the Redland Hospital expansion including an ICU.
"We will build a satellite hospital in Redlands to take pressure off the hospital and deliver services like kidney dialysis in the community," she said.
