Basketball Australia is on the lookout for a long-term coach for the Boomers - but whether that fits with Brian Goorjian's plans remains to be seen.
Goorjian expressed his desire to coach the Boomers at next year's Olympics after Brett Brown stepped down following his axing from NBA outfit Philadelphia 76ers.
BA confirmed on Thursday that it was keen to appoint a coach until the 2023 World Cup, not just for the Olympics.
Goorjian was initially the hot favourite to win the role, but whether he would be keen to commit to a long-term deal remains to be seen.
Others in the picture include Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson and Sydney Kings coach Will Weaver, along with respected coaching figures Rob Beveridge and Dean Vickerman.
Perth Wildcats legend Ricky Grace will be among a six-person selection panel to oversee the recruitment process.
Matti Clements, Neil Craig, Peter Lonergan, Jerril Rechter, and Jan Stirling are the other members.
"In recruiting for this head coach position, Basketball Australia is seeking to appoint a candidate with a longer-term objective of leading the senior men's national team program post a successful Tokyo Olympic campaign," BA chief executive Jerril Rechter said.
"Coaching the Australian Boomers is a privileged position. We enter this process with an open mind and are committed to appointing a coach who reflects our ambitions and best suits the needs of our senior men's national team program."
Goorjian, a six-time title-winning coach in the NBL, was appointed coach of the Hawks in June.
He also coached the Boomers from 2001-2008, building a strong relationship with the player group at the time.
The Boomers plan to announce their new coach in December.
With the NBA season to run from January to August next year, the Boomers may be without their biggest stars for the Olympics, which starts on July 23.
