THE Menzies family have added another chapter to their long history at Birkdale Scout Group.
Five-year-old Alex became the third member of the family to don the uniform last week, following in the footsteps of his uncle Scott and grandfather Stephen.
Alex, whose last name is Boobyer, is now the first known and only current third generation member of Birkdale Scout Group.
His grandfather and uncle's scouting legacy spans more than 50 years combined, with the pair first getting involved during the 90s.
Scott Menzies said his sister wanted her son Alex to be involved in scouts as soon as he was old enough.
"I think it goes to show what fun dad and I have had over the years," he said.
"We have just got a new youth program that really focusses on the outdoors, bushwalking, bush craft and camping skills.
"Week to week, it is just fun activities where they learn how to build and light fires, tie knots to put together a catapult, participate in craft or cooking and fun outdoor games like soccer."
Mr Menzies joined Birkdale scouts in 1992 at the age of six, and has since risen to the position of group leader.
His father Stephen joined in 1995 and is now in control of the 11 to 15-year-old age group.
Mr Menzies said there was a range of benefits to being involved in scouting.
"The life skills make me capable as a person and allow me to make a contribution to the community," he said.
"There is also that social aspect. Almost all of my friends are scouts.
"It is an active and fun outdoor program with heaps of learning opportunities, both for kids and adults. The fees are also quite low in comparison to sports groups.
"We have VET qualified training courses for adults, things like certificates and diplomas in outdoor education and adventurous activities."
