NORTH Stradbroke Island police are reminding people to buckle up and slow down on the roads as children return to school next week.
Sergeant Darren Scanlan said police would be out in force patrolling the island's 40km/h school zone to ensure motorists were obeying the speed limit.
"40km/h school zones have been around for many years now," he said. "Dunwich State School has flashing 40km/h signs as well as coloured road markings indicating the zone.
"If you are caught speeding, then you are either distracted and not paying attention or willfully ignorant of measures put in place for the safety of our children."
Sergeant Scanlan urged motorists to ensure all passengers, especially children, were wearing seatbelts before setting off on a trip.
It comes after a 50-year-old Port Douglas woman was fined for driving with an unrestrained child.
Police saw the passenger without a seatbelt while patrolling Dickson Way at Point Lookout about 3.30pm on Sunday.
"With school returning next week, it is a timely reminder for drivers to ensure all passengers - especially children - have their seatbelts on before driving off," Sergeant Scanlan said.
Four speeding fines were handed out on the island in the past week, with a Wellington Point woman recording the highest speed.
She was caught travelling at 69km/h in a 50km/h zone at Dickson Way about 3pm on Sunday, according to police.
Exceeding the speed limit by between 13km/h and 20km/h attracts a $266 fine and three demerit points.
