A COMMUNITY service group is calling for volunteers to join a program that is helping seniors become better users of technology.
STAR Tech, which was launched in 2019, needs people who are knowledgeable with tablets and smartphones to give up a few hours of their time each week for the elderly.
The program has helped more than 380 seniors become more confident with technology.
Volunteers are needed to support the program's participants in group workshops and home visits.
"Technology can be a very effective measure to encourage the elderly to maintain their independence," program coordinator Neha Shukla said.
"STAR Tech is a timely initiative to encourage seniors to become more confident users of digital devices, to connect with their family and friends, and engage with the wider community."
The coronavirus pandemic has seen the elderly switch onto technology to stay connected while the physical divide remains in place.
STAR Tech volunteer Tanya Spethman said volunteering was a good way to help elderly people with limited digital skills use technology in their daily lives and connect with like-minded people.
Wynnum's Ed and Jill Doyle recently joined STAR Tech.
"We were hesitant at first but starting the program we can get apps, watch catch up TV, read eBooks and make video calls to our loved ones," they said.
Prospective volunteers could call 3821 6699 or email startech@starct.org.au for information on how to get involved in the Star Tech program.
