NEW local awards will celebrate the youth of the Redlands and their contributions in the community.
The Redlands Coast Young Legends Awards, launched this week, will recognise the achievements of Redlands residents aged 13 to 25.
Mayor Karen Williams said there were a lot of young people in the community doing amazing things, but who were often overlooked.
"I know our youth will be our future leaders and it's more important than ever for us to recognize the great contributions young people make in our community," she said.
"When we were in the middle of the pandemic last year we noticed young people were helping others and volunteering with organisations within Redland City.
"Now we're calling on people to nominate the Young Legends they know in our community so we can formally acknowledge their contributions."
There are four categories: Young Legend of the Year, Community Commitment, Environment and Sustainability and Sports Leadership and Achievement.
The Redlands has a wealth of talented, passionate young people.
Among them is Jenali Collier, named the 2021 Redlands Young Citizen of the Year for her work with youths on her YouTube channel, leading the Livewire Kids Club at Mount Cotton and as a youth leader with C4 Youth Fellowship.
Also in 2021, Redlands brothers William and Daniel Clarke were named Queensland Young Australians of the Year for their work in orangutan conservation.
Jessica Taylor was the Queensland Young Achiever of the Year in 2020, recognised for her work with QENDO, a not-for-profit that supports women and girls affected with endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS or infertility.
Madina Mohmood was the 2019 Young Achiever of the Year for her work to promote and raise awareness of cultural diversity and empower young women.
Nominations for the Redlands Coast Young Legends Awards close at 4pm on March 12.
Finalists will be invited to an awards night on April 15, during National Youth Week.
