Who should be our next Australian of the Year? It's time to have your say

It only takes one nomination for someone to end up as the Australian of the Year.

"One nomination is all it takes to ensure the person you find inspiring is in the running for the Australian of the Year Awards," National Australia Day Council chief executive Karlie Brand said.

Australians are being reminded that nominations for the 2022 Australian of the Year Awards close at midnight on July 31.

"We rely solely on members of the public to nominate people for the awards," Ms Brand said. "So, you really do have a very important say in who you think should be recognised."

Tasmania's Grace Tame was named 2021 Australian of the Year on the eve of Australia Day in January.

An advocate for sexual assault survivors, Ms Tame recently told publisher ACM that the Australian of the Year Awards "not only allow us to recognise and celebrate the work of people from all walks of life, they also enable us to elevate the platform so that further change can happen as a result".

You can nominate online at australianoftheyear.org.au for the four categories: Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia's Local Hero.

"Each year when we announce the award recipients, there are people out there in the community who submitted a nomination which put things in motion," Ms Brand said. "It's a very powerful thing to nominate someone."
