They say one man's trash is another man's treasure, and that was certainly the case for Redland Bay jeweller Angela Hampton.
Ms Hampton won the Queen of Gems title and the people's choice award at the Winton Opal Festival with a one of a kind stone she found in a bucket of water.
She used them to make a set of peacock feather earrings which feature a split pair of boulder opals mined in Queensland.
"The design of them was inspired by my mums love of peacock feathers. I was lucky to find these opals, uncut in a bucket of water at an opal convention and I instantly I knew they were what I'd been looking for," Ms Hampton said.
Ms Hampton has had her own studio at Hampton Fine Jewellery and Design in Redland Bay for four years.
The veteran jeweller has been making original pieces for more than 18 years and said she was excited when she found out she had won.
She won the same awards last year at the Winton Opal Festival and received a commendation from the judges the year before.
"I felt really happy to place again, I didn't find out until the next morning but I was ecstatic," she said.
"Opals remind me of the magic in this world, they're deep and mystical and completely natural, when I look at them I feel happy.
"I'm also really proud that Queensland produces some of the best boulder opal in the world. Opal is a piece of home to me."
Ms Hampton was unsure if she would enter next year, with plans to wrap up her business in 17 months to sail around Australia, but would keep making new pieces until she closed.
She also planned to continue posting art and craft tutorials on Youtube and Instagram and hoped to gain a following on social media.
Anyone who would like to view the prize winning piece which is also for sale can do so at Ms Hampton's Redland Bay studio.
