The Carmel College student, who is also studying nursing while finishing her senior year at high school, was one of the competition's top 12 vocalists.

The radio station is putting together a new band made up of under 18 talent to follow in the footsteps of other top Brisbane groups like Powderfinger, The Veronicas and Savage Garden.

Already they have chosen the bass and lead guitarists, and a drummer.

Ms Rodrigues made a mark on audiences, beating out hundreds of other entrants to make the top 12 vocalists and collecting 38 per cent of the audience vote in the semi-finals.

She is now preparing to perform in the final later this month.

Her mother Val, who entered Tyla in the competition without her knowledge, said her daughter was up for the challenge.

The radio station called Ms Rodrigues on Monday to tell her she had received more than 4500 public votes.

"I've not been so excited to receive a call like this in my whole life," Ms Rodrigues said.

"It's been so awesome to get the support that I have received to get this far."

Bowman MP Andrew Laming said it was inspiring to see the support surge for Ms Rodrigues when it was needed.

"The one thing we know about Redlands is they all get behind home grown talent," he said.

"This is just another step in Tyla's exciting career. Let's all wish her every success, not just in this comp but in her singing career."
