Redlands retirees will take to the court for walking basketball hosted by the RedCity Roar to celebrate seniors month in Queensland.
The basketball club will host a come and try day at the Redlands PCYC on Sunday October 3 for grandparents, grandchildren, friends and the elderly community to have a go at the new variation of the sport.
RedCity Roar community participation manager Nathan Farley said the modified game allowed more people to get involved with basketball.
"Walking basketball is a great newly introduced form of exercise as its engaging and fun, puts low limits of stress on the body and is a great way to meet some new friends and help our seniors live a more social and rewarding life," he said.
"It will be a cool chance for the young and old to complete some exercise together... and if a younger person is a basketballer themselves, they can teach their elderly friend a trick or two which will be rewarding relationship building opportunity for them."
Mr Farley said with people spending more time in their homes, it was crucial to find activities to stay active.
"Being fit and healthy not only will make you feel better everyday but help limit your chances of any problematic injuries to our bodies allowing us to live a more sustained life," he said.
Redland City Council provided funding to RedCity Roar to make the free program, and the club hopes to implement a regular walking basketball program if they receive a significant participation uptake.
There will also be a sausage sizzle at the end of the day to allow the athletes to cool down with a hot lunch.
Following the event, for the next three Tuesdays RedCity Roar will run 1.5 hour walking basketball sessions for all ages.
