A 148-unit retirement facility, supermarket and a multi-level car park is on the cards for a Cleveland shopping centre.
A development application has been lodged with Redland City Council for the expansion of Cleveland Central at 67-107 Middle Street.
In 2019 Sydney-based Haben Property Group acquired the centre from property developer Stockland and announced it had its sights on a $4.8 million expansion which would include an Aldi and a number of specialty stores.
The proposed development will be carried out in two stages and the mall will remain open during construction.
Designed by i2C Architects, stage one will see the demolition of existing shops on Wynyard and Middle Street, and the extension and refurbishment of the existing shopping centre.
There will be a new major supermarket, Aldi or similar, restaurants and new two-level basement car park with 293 spaces.
Stage two proposes the demolition of existing retail stores to provide circulation space to a second storey and podium.
There will be a multi-deck car park accessed from Queen Street with an additional 239 car spaces.
A flexible multiple dwelling or retirement facility 17 one-bedroom units, 104 two-bedroom units and 27-three bedroom units is earmarked for phase two.
According to the development application done by Urbis, the expansion hopes to "create a dynamic and vibrant town centre that supports community vitality, genuine mixed use activity and celebrates the cultural and natural uniqueness of Cleveland".
The application focuses on creating a cohesive centre rather than two separate buildings.
The application before the council is code assessable, which means it does not require community input but must conform to stringent guidelines set out in Redlands Planning Scheme 2018.
