Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine to take leave of absence

Paine announced last week that he would step down from the Australian captaincy after news of a lewd texting scandal broke.

The decision to take a break from the game was confirmed by Cricket Tasmania on Friday morning.

"Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future," the statement read.

Taking to social media, Paine's manager James Henderson said the decision was in the best interest of the wicket-keeper's mental health.

"Confirming that [Paine] is stepping away from cricket for an indefinite mental health break," Henderson's post said.

"We are extremely concerned for his and [his wife] Bonnie's well-being."

The announcement comes as Paine was set to make his return to one-day cricket, however, he will now no longer be included in the squad, according to Cricket Tasmania.

"Tim's decision makes him unavailable for selection for today's Marsh One-Day Cup match against Western Australia," the statement read.

"His place in the squad will be taken by Charlie Wakim.

"Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim and his family both professionally and personally over the summer."
